I was quite sure I would be forgiven for Week 5′s stitch be a wee bit late as I was stuck in code land getting the site functioning. What. A. Ride… I will not even go into the horror of a weird gremlin that got
to me just as I sent out the email saying we were launched. I had everything set, really I did, and then poof…it was like a cat on catnip got into a stash of yarn, only it was the processes on the website that were not behaving… it was not pretty…. Needless to say, I survived and thank you to all of you who have hung in there with me! I bow to you all in gratitude! Quick note: This site is best viewed using Google Chrome & Firefox. IE doesn’t like it much and loads slowly if at all.
Great news came in the mail this weekend though, in the form of Dora Orhenstein’s new book, Custom Crocheted Sweaters – Make Garments that Really Fit. I’ll be reviewing this book next week and as a special treat we will feature a video interview of Dora who graciously agreed to come on camera for the CLF! Stay tuned for more info!
On to the stitch… This stitch is used in Dora’s Shawled Collar Tunic. It’s super easy and really pretty! I made this swatch out of a sport weight acrylic.
The instructions are my own.
This crochet stitch is created by single crocheting and double crocheting into the same stitch and then skipping a stitch in the base chain. This allows for a slanting/shelled appearance.
On subsequent rows you will skip the dc stiches and work into the scs of the previous rows.
Base Chain: Multiples of 2 + 2
Row 1: [SC into second chain from hook, dc into same stitch, sk st], repeat to end of row, end row with sc, ch 1, turn.
Row 2. You will work only into scs of previous rows. Sk dc,[* sc dc into sc of row 1, sk dc] Repeat from * across row ending with sc, ch 1 turn.
This is a lovely crochet stitch with lots of stretch and yet solid enough for tops and tanks. More about Dora’s beautiful new book soon.
