It’s Christmas Day and many are getting ready to gather with family and friends. Traveling short and long distance to make merry the day, eat and drink, and unwrap packages that sparkle and glitter.
Not everyone has a family to go to, not everyone has friends near by. There are lots of reasons for this, perhaps you had to travel for work, maybe you’re in the military (thank you for your service), or maybe your blood relations are the last people on earth you want to see. Maybe you’ve suffered tragedy in the past, maybe you suffer from illness, or maybe you do not celebrate the day at all.
If you are alone, if you are lonely, I want you to know that I’m thinking about you. Even if you don’t celebrate the winter religious festivals, there has been a human tradition of celebrating the winter solstice for thousands of years, because it is indeed our darkest hour on earth. We celebrate the end of diminishing light and hope to usher in longer days, warmer days, and times of promise (Spring) in a few months time. Being with others is also a human need, oh sure we can be jaded and say otherwise, but being lonely is an emptiness that can seem like a bottomless pit.
So, if you are feeling lonely today or any other day I want you to know this from me.
I truly believe that you are beautiful.
Who you are is unique. You are a gift. You are more valuable than T.V.s and new games, you are more valuable that oil, you are more valuable than a shiny car. You are a gift to this world, and I’m sorry it has been a harsh place in which to live.
You are important
You may not think so, but you are important. You really have no idea how many lives you touch. Maybe you smiled at someone on the street when they were having a rough day and that one small act made them feel just a bit better. Twenty years ago that smile made me decide to live one more day. You may not always know your impact, but know that you have one.
You have the power to change things…
You have the power to changes things in your life. You may not be able to change your circumstances, but you have the power to change how you choose the see them. Stop looking out, look in and know that you are perfectly you. When you stop knocking yourself, or fearing to love yourself, you can connect to life in such a profound manner. In fact, when you can love who you are regardless of circumstance it’s a game changer.
Maybe I’ve met you, most likely I have not. I know it’s hard to believe that I hold a special place in my heart for you. I do. Ever since I was a little girl, my heart would ache at the thought of those who didn’t have love in their life. As I grew older and experienced monumental struggles and soul bending pain, my compassion deepened further.
I love you, because you are my family. You are part of my human family and I’m so sorry I haven’t met you yet. See, even if you and I think differently, or disagree completely, I really do still love you. Humans are such a funny species, we can cause such great harm and yet we can possess such great beauty. I love you because you are you.
With this note please know you are not alone today or any other day, because I hold you firmly in my heart.
