Cro-innovations: A Crochet Curriculum

If you’ve taught crochet or even thought about teaching crochet you will know that one of the most daunting aspects of the matter is creating a comprehensive curriculum. You don’t want to breach copyright so you most likely have to write up a pattern, instructions and other goodies. You have to think about every detail, after all just teaching one class and you’ll find out that something you find to be the only logical way to do something is far from that in the mind of everyone else.

Our dear member Kim Guzman decided to tackle this problem. As an awarded nationally known teacher, Kim was frustrated at being in demand but unable to travel to students around the country. Still mothering a small child Kim chooses to stay home and work and enjoy her youngest while she can. Ever the industrious one, Kim created a comprehensive curriculum that teachers can purchase from her website, it’s fully supported by Kim. You can find Kim’s Curriculum here http://www.kimguzman.com  Knowing how meticulous Kim is in her attention to detail in her patterns, I can but imagine how clear the instructions are in her curriculum. I recently interviewed her about this innovating product and here’s what she had to say.

FL: What made you think of creating a crochet teacher curriculum?
Kim:  First, after preparing classes for years, I realized that I was often
challenged by trying to come up with interesting and clever classes. Trying to
come up with a technique and a matching beginner project can be just as
challenging. It occurred to me that it must be the same for other teachers,
especially new teachers. Second, as much as I love to teach, there are only so
many students I can reach. I don’t do a lot of traveling mostly because of my
young 6-year-old. But, I still wanted to find a way to teach the material I had
prepared to as many students as possible. What better way than teach the
teachers so they can teach others? I am helping streamline the process of
teaching because I can’t be everywhere.
FL: What has been the reception to this product?
Kim: I introduced the curriculum with only one class and many teachers have
purchased it for teaching in yarn shops. In the beginning, I decided to sell the
project pattern and teacher material in one package. However, there have been
many who have requested only the project pattern without the teacher material.
Therefore, I have reintroduced the program with some changes so that teachers
have that option. The project patterns can now be purchased separately at
wholesale pricing. This has made a huge difference and has increased sales of
the curriculum. I love the idea that I am putting material in the hands of
teachers all over the world to teach these techniques.
FL: What do you think is the best part of this curriculum for teachers?
The best part is taking the challenge out of planning a class. Teachers can
purchase the class package and teach the class straight away. It makes the
entire experience more enjoyable.
I am available at all times to assist the teacher in learning the material.
The teacher material includes text, photos and some video material. I want to
ensure that the teacher has a firm grasp on the material so that he/she is able
to teach every aspect of the class.
FL: What are your future plans with this?
Kim: I will add more classes as time permits. This is such a new and different
concept. I’ve not seen it anywhere. So, at this point, I’m uncertain how far I
can take it. I would love to add at least 6 new classes per year.
FL: How long have you been offering this curriculum?
Kim: I started it about a year ago.
FL: What more do you want folks to know about this program?
Although I haven’t turned all of my patterns into classes, teachers can
request wholesale pricing on any of the patterns I have available at
http://www.crochetkim.com  or http://www.kimanedesigns.net. Just send me an email
at kim@crochetkim.com  and I will provide the cost information. Kim’s curriculum is found on her website http://www.kimguzman.com
