When I was first asked to review this book, I had to think about it. In general I find books about granny squares a bit tired. Not that I dislike granny squares, I don’t. Like many crochet lovers, I have a certain fondness for these quick piece as you go motifs. Yet, there’s a part of me that wishes the ubiquitous granny square was slightly less pervasive in print. That being said, when I virtually “thumbed” through this book, I had to smile.
Sarah London did a beautiful job with the projects, and came up with some great variations on what can be a very tired subject. I love how she turned the traditional look on it’s ear and created some fun and hooktastic projects.
The real litmus test was having my daughter look over my shoulder. This hip and happening 18 year old and die-hard hookstar was oohing and ahhing over the projects, making plans for her future appartment as she looked through the projects. So it’s official, this is a cool book.
I have two favorite projects out of this book, the first being the ottoman or footstool. This is a great idea! A quick and easy project that would be perfect in the family room or dorm.
My other favorite is this adorable table cloth. The granny edging is really homey and cute! I really think it’s lovely. In fact, I would edge a table cloth like this to take with me for picnics, since we’re coastal and the wind always seems to kick up at our picnics. The weight of the granny squares would keep the cloth on the tables perfectly!
The book design is clean, well laid out, and the instructions are easy to follow. I think this book really does live up to it’s title!
