Yarn Shopping is an Artform

I don’t know about you, but I normally hate shopping. Seriously, walking through department stores is the most BORING thing in the world to me. The clothes are boring, the shoes are boring, the jewelry is boring, and I’m just not that into “stuff.”  But yarn shopping? Holy Guacamole Catwoman that is a whole ‘nother deal.

I LOVE yarn shopping, in fact I will take an entire weekend and go LYS hopping. Yes, yes I know I’m spoiled! I have so many choices available to me locally. Lately, I’ve been pretty good about being faithful to PinchKnitter Yarn in Stanwood, WA cause they are the home team and partner with us for Crochet @Cama. I still make the rounds to my various favorite stores though, just less often.

This is my LYS shopping routine:

1. I walk into the store and I stop to take in the vision of fibery goodness

2. I say hi to whomever is working the counter and ask any questions if I might have them (If they aren’t talking to a customer).

3. I  walk to the right of the store and peruse the shelves

4. I gently feel the yarn with the back of my hand so as not to get it dirty or oily. Plus it’s more sensitive on the back of our hands than on the palms because we don’t use that skin.

5. I roam the shelves and bins all the way around the store in a circuit, then I hit the interior.

While doing number 4 & 5, I contemplate projects I want to make or get new ideas. I may also start to ask questions about the yarn and if there are any crocheted samples. (Cause well, DUH!)

I can spend at least an hour looking, feeling, and discussing the yarn with others before I even decide to purchase something.

I also make sure I have a project bag with me, complete with hook collection because after purchase I have to sit down, have to I tell you, and play with the new purchase! I swatch for fun, I’m just that sick and twisted.

What are your yarn shopping habits or routines? I would love to hear all about it!

If you want to be as sick and twisted knowledgeable as myself about how to choose the right stitch for a yarn, or yarn for a stitch, join me on Sunday Sept 18 at 11am until noon pacific for another great webinar!  Which Stitch?
